on my key, if I hold the button down for a few seconds a red light comes on where the infra red transmitter is situated on the key. What is that for?

ah right.
still wish the transmitter and receiver was a bit more powerful and doesn't require you to have an aim like James Bond to unlock the thing.

The transmitters seem to be quite variable...
Both Mercs have the MBSS alarm on them (which even our local dealer has agreed is a shockingly crap alarm system, but hey-ho...).
The SL seems to be able to be unlocked from a fair ol' distance at any position around the car. To get the C250 to unlock I have to practically sit on the car with the key pressed up against the window, and you can forget trying to lock/unlock it from any position rearwards of the B-pillar.

In order to increase the distance from how far u can lock/unlock ur MB just hold the key **** near ur temple/head and this increases the further distance that the car can be locked/unlocked from ;) . I have tried this and it works on newer generation MBs.

only works if the system is the RF version. The infra-red one, which is what I have, has too have a clear line of sight between receiver and transmitter ie. you have to aim it directly at the RVM otherwise no go.

It's to check your battery power in the transmitter mate. ;)
