Looking at a 190E, am told to SRS light stays on until engine is shut off. Could it just need to be reset? Also, it's located in New York, rust inevitable??

rust - not inevitable, but the steering wheel might be on the wrong side........

I've got a 190 series and the SRS light only comes on when:
1-You turn the ignition key to "on". (Goes out as soon as the engine runs).
2-When the SRS/airbag computer is compromised.

In all other situations, the SRS light is always OFF.

My MB repairman told me once that, especially after a deployment of the air bag, the computer has to be replaced. According to him it cannot be reset out of liability issues. Since the replacement of the SRS computer is quite costly, many try to dump the car after such incident (sometimes after collecting the insurance money). Another trick is to take the light-bulb out to mask the compromised computer. So if it doesn't come on when you turn the key, you should start smelling fish.

To be told that the SRS light has to stay on, is like being taken for a ride by a sleasy second hand car salesman.

And yes, New York has rust problems (snow + ice = salt & rust). Here in North America you don't buy Eastern cars, you buy Western/Californian cars.

When looking for a nice Mercedes, don't forget to try the US & German e-bay.

Hope this helps.
