Thought this was worth sharing with others ...

Before removing your dashboard cluster to replace faulty dashboard backlights, try giving the cluster a firm knock.

I removed my cluster on Friday to replace the bulbs only to find none of them appeared blown. On reconnecting the cluster I found none of the bulbs were lit, and then after replacing the cluster (in a huff - aka with force) two had come on. I then tried the "knock it harder" routine to get the cluster seated in and sure enough all backlights now came on.

So rather than removing trim, and trying to remove the cluster try giving the cluster a knock from the front first.
(Bear in mind that the cluster is made from plastic though!)

Has anyone else seen this/is it a common "feature"?

yes, when my cluster was removed to fit chrome rings, the display for mileage and trip did not work. when I released the handbrake, the thunk shook it back on :)
