New member, thanks for having me

I have just bought Mercedes [W210] E320 CDI [2000 year model] from Mercedes Benz with 12 months MB warranty

My problem is with an intermittent nearside xenon headlight bulb going out, I can run for ages with lights on,everything ok, if I have to make a stop and turn off the lights, on turning back on the lights a malfuntion shows up on the onboard computer, not every time, but now and again, sometimes the fault rectifies itself in a few minutes and the light comes back on, on other occassions it can be anything up to 20 minutes before the xenon light comes back on

I took the car back to Mercedes but they were unable to find or show up any faults on the their workshop computer, they can't repair something which doesn't show up

I was told to carry on using the car, if it happens again bring it straight in with the computer malfunction showing on the dash, this I can't do for two reasons, firstly Mercedes are closed at night, secondly, the malfunction rectifies itself and wipes out the malfunction error when the headlight comes back on

I therefore stand between the devil and the deep blue sea

has anyone got any thoughts on this problem, could it be the xenon bulb, the headlight switch or any relays etc etc, cos Merc don't seem to know

anyone else had this problem????
Thanks

New bulb and ballast maybe? I can't think of much else that would go awry?

Thanks for the reply, did just that today, drove with lights on and up popped the fault, drove to Merc and yes the fault is the bulb and excitor/ballast. Mercedes do not stock this item, it has to be ordered, 128 quid

Thanks

But Cap'n, your cars under warranty isn't it?

Should cover that, you'd have thought.....?

You are quite right Sir, The vehicle has 12 month warranty, Merc tell me that bulbs very rarely go of this type.

but it all depends on the small print of the warranty as a rule bulbs don't count. I think in this case with this type o bulb warranty will be given

Update
New lamp control unit fitted,[under warranty] ballast or whatever you call it,

no replacement bulbs [xenon] fitted as Merc cannot get hold of them at the moment, but everything is ok, at the moment, they are going to fit replacement bulbs as there is a slight not right true white light being emmited,

If you read the sales information it says the Xeon bulbs last forever and never needs changing like other bulbs..

You could get it changed because of that statement alone.. go armed to the service desk with a brochure and show then the Xeon page
