View Full Version : Best price for Tom Tom Go?
Hi!
Is £412.98 (inclusive of Vat & delivery) the current best available price for the TomTom Go GPS Navigation Unit? I saw this on Amazon. Does anyone know if a lower price is available elsewhere?
I am hoping the price might fall a bit more after Christmas. Which means trying to organise a group buy is out of the question as most people wants the TTG on their Christmas list. :(

Amazon is the cheapest that I've found. Could not even get a deal for a group buy  :( .
It's like trying to find a cheap Ipod - they don't exist :D if you think how long Ipod's have been out and they still hold their price - then TTG is prob gonna be the same. I wouldn't expect to see a price drop after xmas.

Scan in Bolton have them on offer of the day @ £410 yesterday and probably up until lunchtime today.
You could pick one up if local.

The price will no doubt drop as soon as they release an improved / facelift version !!

Cannot see why they would/should lower the price!
No improved/changed model expected from TomTom at all, although there is some discussion about why the current model doesn't have bluetooth for GPRS based traffic updates.
They have a long line of extras planned for this unit which will be released over time including changing face plates, professional installation kits for better integration with stereo systems, etc.
They were originally going to be RRP£499 for the release, then go up to £599 however this has not happened. Probably due to the fierce competition from other manufacturers.
Company seems to have done very well with this unit. Only complaints I have read are power failures (unit dies, thanks to 12v car adaptor) and the lack of full postcode routing.

That was the other one I was looking at. Does that include VAT? Also my Costco membership has expired. Was thinking of buying it through my business and save the VAT anyway but my job doesn't involve travelling/driving so may not be justified :(

I'd have thought the TT Go was much better than the NavMan 620.

Anyone tried the camera database overlay for the Tom Tom Go yet?
If so, how good are the alerts and how accurate is it (thinking of abandoning the idea of a Road Angel in favour of one of these)

I've used the camera database on my Pocket PC TomTom III, which I'm sure is the same source.
Although it works I don't think its a real substitute for the road angel, the database has I believe only been updated twice this year and so can be out of date, plus I leave the road angel on all the time where as I only use the sat nav when I need it (I wouldn't want to leave the satnav on display).

I have used the camera databases a LOT!
Not too bad. Seems to be updated about monthly or so at the moment from what I can see. Overall very good, but as it is not a commercial offering, the Road Angel service is better.
Example - the A13 eastbound out of london is camera city at the moment, and not a single one is in the database from a few weeks back. I have had to add them all.
One thing to look forward to though, more users adding to the db will make it better.
TTG + my eyesight is good enough for me. I leave the TTG on all the time.

Have a fairly competive price on the TT.

I hear conflicting views on the camera databases - does it come with them and you update via the PC ro are they an optional extra like the European maps?
And what about memory cards - comes with 32mb? Is that to store your personal destinations?

Morning Pammy,
The unit comes with a 128mb card which is big enough to hold all of England *OR* the Major Roads of Europe, which is provided on the CDROM in the box.
If you want to load them in parallel, you'll have to buy a 256 or bigger. I picked up a 512 in Singapore for £30. :-)
The detailed country maps for Europe are a separate package that needs to be purchased, or knicked from a popular download service on the internet.
The card is used for everything - the whole operating system appears to boot from the card and the unit will do nothing without a card installed. Maps and POIs are stored on the card too.
The camera database probably needs some clarification:
TomTom have released a software update (you'll need to download and install from their site) to enable custom point of interest to be installed, so the kind people at pocketgps.co.uk are merely providing a data file containng the co-ordinates of the speed cameras, specs cameras and red light cameras. Becuase of this, the files are ever so tiny (all databases total 530k - impressive).
Site is here: http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php
As you can see, there is no real need to use a bigger card. The software that comes with the unit allows you to add/remove maps and voices from the card via the USB link cable provided.
Let me know if you would like to know any more!

Cheers Scott - that's most helpful :D better get ordering one then and aquire a copy of the detailed European maps as well as looks like we may need them :p

Ive got an origin b2 and sat nav ....
If you want sat nav , buy sat nav .. if you want a camera database , buy a gps blackspot detector...
From what i can make out , the camera add on to the tttg is just an add on , but not really as serious or comprehensive as a dedicated unit which is always updating their locations.. There is no point in saying that its got most of the locations and youve got to learn to trust it over time.
Every device has its job .. nuff said :D
Not meaning to be big headed or anything , but just telling it how it is...

Fuzzer, your comments are 100% correct. The simple fact is that Road Angel/Origin products are designed to do one thing, and it's commerically motiviated to be useful. The pseudo solutions are user effort driven and should not be considered equal.
I have gained a certain level of trust with my TTG unit, however the only way to be 100% sure is to take it easy and be vigilant.

yup - don't disagree - but only want one unit - not two and the TTG will swicth nicely between cars as necessary. It's horses for courses :D
