Mine (like the OP's) is a C270CDi, and it certainly DOES upshift on it's own if held in a lower gear. It threw me at first, 'cos it up-shifts pretty early - it doesn't go anywhere near the red-line, never mind the rev limiter (if there is one a diesel!).
