From memory the five speed box from that year is always in what you might call "manual" mode via the moving and / or holding the stick left / right.

There are no other selection buttons next to the selector other than S & W, unlike the 7 Gtronic which has M if you also have the steering wheel buttons or padlles.

Moving the stick momentarilly to the left takes you down a gear and restricts the shift programme to that gear, i.e. if you have gone to 4th you should see 4 in the display and the box will not shift up further than 4th unless, you move AND HOLD the stick to the right then all the gears available in D are available again. It will, of course, shift down if you leave it alone but wont shift up beyond 4th.

Moving and HOLDING the stick to the left selects the best gear for acceleration at that point in time, whatever that gear may be so, it could in theory drop more than one gear to get you there.

Did'nt you say there was a dash warning light of some sort coming on?
